چکیده

We develop new mathematical results based on the spherical harmonic convolution framework for reflection from a curved surface. We derive novel identities, which are the angular frequency domain analogs to common spatial domain invariants such as reflectance ratios. They apply in a number of canonical cases, including single and multiple images of objects under the same and different lighting conditions. One important case we consider is two different glossy objects in two different lighting environments. Denote the spherical harmonic coefficients by B lm , where the subscripts refer to the spherical harmonic indices, and the superscripts to the lighting (1 or 2) and object or material (again 1 or 2). We derive a basic identity, B lmB 2,2 lm = B 1,2 lmB 2,1 lm , independent of the specific lighting configurations or BRDFs. While this paper is primarily theoretical, it has the potential to lay the mathematical foundations for two important practical applications. First, we can develop more general algorithms for inverse rendering problems, which can directly relight and change material properties by transferring the BRDF or lighting from another object or illumination. Second, we can check the consistency of an image, to detect tampering or image splicing.

Fast Arbitrary BRDF Shading for Low-Frequency Lighting Using Spherical Harmonics

Real-time shading using general (e.g., anisotropic) BRDFs has so far been limited to a few point or directional light sources. We extend such shading to smooth, area lighting using a low-order spherical harmonic basis for the lighting environment. We represent the 4D product function of BRDF times the cosine factor (dot product of the incident lighting and surface normal vectors) as a 2D table ...

A Signal-Processing Framework for Reflection—Part 2: Analytic Formulae for Common Lighting and BRDF Models

The first part of this paper presented a signal-processing framework for analyzing the reflected light field from a homogeneous convex curved surface under distant illumination. The notion of reflection as convolution was formalized, with a quantitative analysis of the reflected light field as obtained by a spherical convolution of the incident illumination and the BRDF. In this part of the pap...

A Signal-Processing Framework for Reflection—Part 1: Reflection as Convolution

We present a signal-processing framework for analyzing the reflected light field from a homogeneous convex curved surface under distant illumination. This analysis is of theoretical interest in both graphics and vision and is also of practical importance in many computer graphics problems—for instance, in determining lighting distributions and bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (B...

Precomputed Radiance Transfer

This paper describes a method for rendering interreflections, self-induced shadows and caustics in real-time in a general low-frequency lighting environment. The method handles environment and area lighting and glossy as well as diffuse objects. The lighting environment is projected onto a lowfrequency spherical harmonic basis. Before the rendering a transfer vector (diffuse case) or a transfer...

Spherical harmonic Gradients for Mid-Range Illumination

Spherical harmonics are often used for compact description of incident radiance in low-frequency but distant lighting environments. For interaction with nearby emitters, computing the incident radiance at the center of an object only is not sufficient. Previous techniques then require expensive sampling of the incident radiance field at many points distributed over the object. Our technique all...
